Origins

In summer 2016, Kelly and Noah Dorrance drove up a single-lane road just outside Healdsburg, searching. The California sun beat down. Its heat wrapped around everything, its light pushing life both up and under. Kelly rolled down her window, letting the warm air wash over her hand as she looked out. Graceful oaks, draped in spanish moss, reached up and over the road towards one another, creating a sun-dappled tunnel of green that felt both mysterious and intimate.

"America is built on a tilt and everything loose slides to California." - Mark Twain

They parked, got out, and—standing next to one another—took it all in. Right where the valley floor began its climb upward, stood a stone casita. Next to it, an elegant patio shaded by manzanitas and oaks. To the right, a small vineyard. The sense of possibility was immediate. They had found it: a home for Reeve.

This wouldn’t be their first rodeo—but it was bound to be their most meaningful one.

Their adventure first started back in Missouri, where they grew up, met each other and fell in love, and picked up some handy Midwestern values and phrases. Big dreams got them out and exploring, first to France for work and then to Italy to marry. Soon, California began calling, with its intoxicating sense of possibility. Here, it said, here is where you belong. Here is where ambition can transform into reality, where hard work can find impact, where you can raise a family, build a life, build a dream. It was an old voice—and a convincing one. They went.

Construction Site

In 2008, Noah co-founded Banshee Wines. Kelly soon joined the team. And—after a few years of tinkering, building, learning, and tinkering some more—they created a winning combination. Banshee took off, with wines being shipped all over the country, and their new tasting room booked every weekend. It was everything they had hoped for.

And yet. They had an itch. Given all they had learned, given all the new ideas and expertise they now had, what would their dream wines taste like now? What would the tasting room for those wines feel like? What sort of community around that wine did they want to create? They began imagining. They began sketching, talking, and planning. Soon, they gave these ideas a name: Reeve.

In 2015, they harvested their first grapes for Reeve. They made those grapes into 500 cases of wine. People liked it. They liked it. With a taste of success for this new vision, they began securing their “dream grapes” from some of the most sought after vineyards around. They met and spoke with farmers, learning about their growing philosophies, learning about the nuances of each slope, and learning the name of each of their dogs. They enlisted the help of world-class experts, including Katy Wilson, who would eventually become Noah’s long-running winemaker partner. Very quickly, Reeve had taken on a life of its own, and it became clear: this was no side project—this was their future.

And so, in 2016, they took the leap, and found Reeve a place to call its own. The stakes were high. They were leaving a great thing. They were walking into the unknown, again. They had recently started a family, and now had two small kids at home. They were borrowing money against a vision that still mostly existed only on paper. But they knew. This was their path. This was why they had come to California. This was why they had come to the land of dreamers and doers.

In the years since, Kelly and Noah have built Reeve into a celebrated winery and tasting room, making frequent appearances on “best of" lists. With a focus on quality, style, and personal connection, they continue to create the wines, experiences, and community they dream of, every day.

Philosophy

Each bottle of Reeve is the result of pursuit. Pursuit of the best vineyards in California. Pursuit of the best growing and winemaking practices. Pursuit of the perfect expression. The perfect expression of what exactly? Of this particular vineyard, with that particular slope, with this particular grower, with this year’s particular weather—all filtered through our own lens and style.

Since every vintage is unique, this pursuit is never-ending—which is exactly how we like it. While we are in good company here in Sonoma County—an area overflowing with local wine-making knowledge, passion, talent—there are a few things that, when taken together, we believe make Reeve pretty special.

We embrace tension
.

In fact, we believe that is where the magic lies, at least for our wines. Within every bottle, we strive to find that elusive place where otherwise opposing forces find transcendental harmony. Elegance and gravity. Intensity and finesse. Depth and lift. Modern palettes and classic techniques. Ready to pop open upon release. Ready to age beautifully in your cellar. Making wine is easy. Making wine that achieves perfect tension is an art, an art we dedicate ourselves to every day.

We believe small is necessary.

We need to be a size that allows us to touch everything, improve everything, perfect everything—and then repeat. We work with world-class masters of various crafts, from our farmers to our coopers. We are passionate about what we do, and want to be able to consider and obsess over every detail. So we stay the size we need to be to do exactly that. Success to us isn’t volume or scale: it’s creating one indelible expression of a time and place in each bottle, every time.

We value relationships above all else.

Even over the wine, you say? Well, yes. Let us explain. Coming west, we didn’t start with much. Mostly just an idea, a passion, and the flexibility of youth. We had to find our way—and, ultimately, finding our way meant finding our people. Experts generous with their wisdom. Peers driven by the same passion. Workers who offered their skills. Farmers who shared their life’s work. Customers who understood our vision. Staff who embodied our values. Finding our path really meant finding our people, and honoring and growing those relationships every day. We’re still on that path. And we’re still finding more of our people. It’s the means—and ultimate joy—of doing what we do.

Vineyards

We’ve developed exceptional relationships with exceptional farmers—farmers who own and work some of the most coveted, single-vineyard sites in Northern California. We work in tight concert with them to grow the ideal fruit for our specific style of wines.

All use responsible farming practices, whether it be sustainable, biodynamic, certified organic, or what we call beyond organic: taking natural farming beyond the requirements of certification.

We hand-selected each and every vineyard for the unique combination of traits it offers. Quality of fruit. Clonal selections. Hillside exposures. Diversity of terroirs. For it is here where, nestled in cool microclimates scattered throughout the Anderson Valley, Mendocino County and Sonoma Coast, Reeve wines begin.

KISER VINEYARD

Ernest and Ruthann Kiser planted this vineyard in the “deep-end” of Anderson Valley nearly 20 years ago with Pinot Noir clones 114, 115, 667 and 777, as well as a suitcase clone from one of Burgundy’s most celebrated vineyards. There is a very clear upper and lower block and it’s fascinating to see the differences in each vintage. The lower block is one of the coldest vineyards in Anderson Valley.

Varietals: Pinot Noir
Location: Anderson Valley
Elevation: 440 ft (upper block), 318 ft (lower block)
Clones: 114, 115, 667, and 777
Soil Type: Sandstone, Shale, Wolfey-Bearwallow Series

McFADDEN VINEYARD

This vineyard was planted by Guinness McFadden in the early 70s and has been farmed organically for most of its history. These Riesling vines are large, burly creatures, almost like small trees. They yield intensely pitched fruit of great depth and character.

Varietals: Riesling
Location: Potter Valley (Mendocino County)
Elevation: 1,000 ft
Clones: Heritage
Soil Type: Alluvial

PETRICHOR VINEYARD

Petrichor sits on the western-most ridge of the Mayacamas mountains. This organically-farmed vineyard has a notable pedigree, with Steve Matthiasson acting as consulting viticulturist, and Lee Martinelli Jr. farming the vineyard. The vines are planted in a high-density, meter-by-meter fashion, creating more competition among the vines, which leads to wines with great verve and intensity.

Varietals: Syrah, Grenache
Location: Fountaingrove District, Sonoma County
Elevation: 1,100 ft
Clones: Syrah - 877, 470; Grenache - Alban
Soil Type: Volcanic

VECINO VINEYARD

This certified organic and biodynamic vineyard is planted with Pinot Noir clones 115, 667 and Roederer 32, and produces wine characterized by the alluvial soils of the area’s high valley floor elevation, and dramatic diurnal temperatures. It has been the source of two of our most popular wines, “Ya Moon” and our Rosé of Pinot Noir, since our inception.

Varietals: Pinot Noir
Location: Potter Valley
Elevation: 1007 ft
Clones: 115, 667, Roederer 32
Soil Type: Alluvial

VONARBURG VINEYARD

Vonarburg means ‘from the town of Ar’ and was the maiden name of grower Norman Kobler’s mother. His parents, Hans and Thersia, were Swiss immigrants who settled in Anderson Valley in the 1960s and founded Lazy Creek, the area’s second oldest winery. Growing up amidst the vines, Norman went on to plant many of the vineyards in the now famous Anderson Valley. For Reeve, he grows Riesling on this special 2.5-acre vineyard with all the zeal, focus, and expertise for which he’s become well-known.

Varietals: Riesling
Location: Anderson Valley
Elevation: 305 ft
Clones: 17 and 23
Soil Type: Fractured Sandstone, Slate

WENDLING VINEYARD

Wendling sits at the chilly end of the Anderson Valley, perched on a south and west facing slope. It was planted in 2010 by Paul Ardzrooni to a large variety of clones and rootstocks. The unique combination that exists here—a very cool zone, a sun-facing orientation, and relatively deep soils - produces velvety wines with great concentration, focus, and length.

Varietals: Pinot Noir
Location: Anderson Valley
Elevation: 470 ft
Clones: 115, 667, 828, 943, La Tache, Suitcase clones
Soil Type: Bearwallow-Wolfey Complex (red to brown well-drained, shallow sandy loam, sandstone, and shales)

WINDSOR OAKS VINEYARD

We explored numerous sites around California for our Reeve Sangioveses, and our clear favorite is the Windsor Oaks Vineyard. Sitting atop a rocky knoll, this vineyard offers the perfect combination of hot days and cool nights, along with well-drained volcanic rock soils—the same Tuscany-like conditions that produce world-class sangioveses.

Varietals: Sangiovese
Location: Chalk Hill AVA
Elevation: 620 ft
Clones: DiLorretto Selection from Montalcino
Soil Type: Volcanic, Rocky

CHARLES HEINTZ VINEYARD

Run by third-generation farmer Charlie Heintz, this vineyard has produced some of the most distinctive examples of California Chardonnay over the past 30 years. His grandfather established this impressive ranch in 1912 just outside of the town of Occidental. Along with having greal soils, it has the rare ability to gather just enough warmth in a cool climate zone to create fantastic layers of flavor, while maintaining impeccable freshness and focus in the wines.

Varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Location: Sonoma Coast AVA (Occidental)
Elevation: 771 ft
Clones: Chardonnay - Clone 4; Pinot Noir - 115, 667, Swan
Soil Type: Goldridge

H. KLOPP VINEYARD

This new vineyard was planted for us in 2014 by Ted Klopp and his daughter Lauren. Almost immediately we recognized its potential for producing wines with exceptional structure and freshness, attributes we especially prize in sun-drenched California. Even the first few vintages produced wines that were lauded for their depth and verve. We are extremely optimistic that H. Klopp will become a new California Chardonnay icon.

Varietals: Chardonnay
Location: Sonoma Coast AVA (Sebastopol)
Elevation: 232 ft
Clones: Mt. Eden, Clone 4, Old Wente, Robert Young
Soil Type: Goldridge, with at least four distinct variations of clay

RICE-SPIVAK VINEYARD

This six-acre vineyard, located southwest of the town of Sebastopol, was planted in 2000. Given its location and low elevation, it receives a near daily dose of cool air from the Pacific Ocean. The vines produce small clusters with tiny berries of extremely intense, aromatic fruit, which show through beautifully in the glass. This is one of the most distinctive single vineyards we make and a crowd-pleasing favorite.

Varietals: Pinot Noir
Location: Sonoma Coast AVA (Sebastopol)
Elevation: 229 ft
Clones: Swan, 115, 667, 777
Soil Type: Goldridge, with volcanic ash

reeve estate VINEYARD

Continuing our love affair with Italy, the vineyards on our property feature Italian varieties. The aggregation of sufficient season long heat, but also cool nights, produces wines of deep impact but also freshness. We planted the newest block below the cottage in 2019 to Sangiovese and Falanghina and in 2020 we grafted over the original plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon to Sangiovese as well. We are located up on a bench and the rocky soils here make for wine with nice angles to them as opposed to the fat rounder wines on the valley floor.

Varietals: Sangiovese, Falanghina
Location: Dry Creek Valley
Elevation: 252 ft
Clones: Sangiovese Clone 23, Falanghina Clone 1
Soil Type: Suther Gravelly Loam

THORN RIDGE VINEYARD

Located on an east-facing slope a few miles from the Pacific Ocean, Thorn Ridge is an exceptional Pinot vineyard for making the type of elegant, driven Pinot that we prefer. It was planted in 1995 on an old apple orchard outside of Sebastopol and produces intense fruit from small clusters. It is farmed by Ted and Lauren Klopp who we also work with at H. Klopp Vineyard.

Varietals: Pinot Noir
Location: Sonoma Coast (Sebastopol Hills)
Elevation: 462-587 ft
Clones: 115, 667, Pommard
Soil Type: Goldridge

Our Team
Katy Wilson

KATY WILSON, Head Winemaker

Katy was raised on a walnut orchard in the Central Valley of California, manifesting her boots-on-the-ground approach to farming at an early age. After getting her degrees in Wine & Viticulture and Agricultural Business at Cal Poly, she took on a number of harvest internships in New Zealand, Australia, and of course, California.

Katy has worked at Joseph Phelps, Flowers, and Kamen and has her own label, LaRue Wines. She and Noah have been winemaking partners for more than 10 years. Her impeccable attention for detail and unrelenting pursuit of crafting the perfect glass of wine have made a considerable impression on the portfolio at Reeve.

Katy lives in Napa with her husband David, their sweet little girl Charlie, and their darling puppy Nico.

John Brandau

JOHN BRANDAU, Estate Manager

Growing up in Sonoma County, John is as native as it gets to the wine scene in Dry Creek Valley and surrounding AVAs. John fell in love with wine at a young age in his pop’s garage - thieving sips from his glass while he was busy closing up shop.

His first Estate Chef & Wine Educator position was in the heart of Alexander Valley at an organic wine and olive oil producing estate. His transition to Reeve has put him at the helm of the fifty-five-acre estate by overseeing the hospitality team, grounds management, sales systems and overall guest experience. And the goats.

John currently spends his free time beating drums alongside his bandmates, tending to family heirloom avocado trees and gardens, running trails, whipping it up in the kitchen, and raising two outstanding young citizens alongside his wife Dora.

Morgan Gray, National Sales Director

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Morgan began her hospitality career early working in luxury hotels and restaurants. When she was introduced to the world of wine during her formative years at university, she fell in love instantaneously.

After graduating, rather than diving into a career in accounting or international business, she moved to Houston, TX and then to San Francisco, CA, working as a sommelier and deepening her knowledge and passion for wine. She finally landed in Healdsburg at Reeve Wines & BloodRoot Wines as National Sales Director where she assists in operations, works with and builds distribution channels, and connects with consumers and sommeliers alike. Just recently, she passed the Theory portion of her Master Sommelier exam and will be sitting for Tasting and Practical later this year. Outside of her wine life, she loves traveling, hiking, yoga, and spending time with her partner and their two sweet pups.

NOAH DORRANCE, Proprietor & Winemaker

Noah Dorrance fell in love with wine at the early age of 18 and has been pursuing a life around it ever since.

Noah launched Reeve in 2015 as a way to dig deeper into the potential of California’s top cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plantings in the Anderson Valley and Sonoma Coast’s diverse terroirs. Noah previously co-founded Banshee Wines in 2009 and made the wines there from 2009 to 2017. Prior to that he worked at Crushpad from 2005-2010.

He is the driving force behind the wines at Reeve, from vineyard scouting and cultivating grower relationships, to overall stylistic vision. He spearheads Reeve’s winemaking and production with the support of Katy to form a powerhouse combination of experience, passion, and wine vision.

Noah is a true visionary and entrepreneur while mercilessly seeking out the next good time—be it on a boat, under the stars, at a concert, tossing the football with son Reeve, or mountain biking with daughter Remy.

KELLY DORRANCE, Proprietor & All Other Things

The title says it all. Kelly has so many varied interests and talents, and happily takes on the role of “whatever it takes”. Kelly graduated with degrees in Art and Business, is right-brained and left-brained, creative and analytical.

At Reeve, Kelly designed the tasting room and set up all the systems. She also oversees (and is obsessed with) all customer experience and touch points—making sure guests leave with full hearts and boxes of wine. She also doesn’t take for granted for one second that she gets to do this alongside the man she loves, with the best team in the world, all while selling crazy good wine.

Outside of work, Kelly thrives on either being in nature or finding underappreciated dusty old things that are ready for their second act. She also manages a household with two incredibly active and darling children, Remy and Reeve, and the world’s best worst dog, Mookie.
